Edible Garden

Edible Garden

Enjoy an edible garden in a small space! With lots of veggie, herb and edible flowers available there’s many options for you to enjoy.

Putting together your own edible garden is easy! Here’s what you’ll need:

  • A container of your choice. Pictured is a 16 inch container, but you can go smaller or larger

  • Soil

  • Compost

  • Plants of your choice

Directions:

Fill your container with soil, topping it off with about 1/4 compost. Mix together the soil and the compost and then water the soil. Make sure that you fill the container right up to the top so that the plants have lots of space to grow!

From here, you’ll want to arrange and plant your garden. For the pictured garden, we planted one Kale into the center, one romaine lettuce on the side, one red leaf on the opposite side from the romaine. Then we popped in two plugs of green onion opposite of each other topped off with two marigolds and violas all across from one another.

Be sure to leave ample space for the plants to grow! You’ll want to make sure that you can see the soil once everything is planted. By leaving space you’ll know that your plants not only have enough room to grow, but also enough space for air to circulate through and help with the health of your plants.

Place your edible garden in an area that gets at least 6 hours of sun per day. Throughout the season, you’ll want to water your plants daily unless we get a lot of rain. You can also add a food grade water soluble fertilizer to your watering schedule; remember that plants need food to produce food!

The harvesting: For your lettuces you can pick off the outside leaves as they mature or you can also wait and harvest a full mature head for a larger amount of leaves. For the kale, you will also be harvesting the outside, larger leaves as they grow. Similarly, the green onion can have the largest stems picks or a one time harvest all at once. Finally, for the flowers, you can pick the blossoms as you’d like. Enjoy!

Other plants that you can plant in a container:

  • herbs

  • swiss chard

  • tomatoes

  • peppers

  • potatoes

  • carrot

  • spinach

  • lettuce mixes

The options are endless!
